About Dr Nijjer
A Leader in Coronary Cardiology
Dr Sukhjinder Nijjer — known as Sukh — is an Interventional Cardiologist with over two decades of clinical experience at the forefront of cardiac care. Trained at the University of Bristol with Distinction and holding a PhD from Imperial College London, he has built his career at the intersection of world-class clinical practice, pioneering research and national medical leadership.
Dr Nijjer holds substantive Consultant posts at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) and Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads complex coronary intervention and cardiac physiology services. In private practice, he sees patients at One Heart Clinic on Harley Street and at the Cromwell Hospital, Syon Clinic and Bishops Wood Hospital.
"He is frequently referred the most complex cases by fellow cardiologists — procedures requiring the most advanced techniques and technologies available."
Dr Nijjer is Director of the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, overseeing three high-volume labs performing among the highest rates of coronary angioplasty in London. For the most challenging cases, he employs advanced tools including shockwave lithotripsy, rotational atherectomy, orbital atherectomy and laser catheters to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient.

Pioneering Research
Developer of iFR & iFR‑Pullback
Technology
Dr Nijjer led the development of iFR (Instantaneous wave-free Ratio) and iFR-Pullback — diagnostic tools that precisely identify which coronary lesions require treatment, sparing patients from unnecessary stenting. The technology, for which Dr Nijjer undertook core scientific studies and acted as major Investigator on the landmark clinical trials, is now a commercial product manufactured by Philips Healthcare.
The trials fundamentally changed international guidelines for coronary revascularisation and are among the most cited studies in the field. Dr Nijjer continues to serve as Principal Investigator on major international trials that shape current standards of care.

National & Local Leadership
Shaping the Future of British Cardiology
Beyond his clinical and research roles, Dr Nijjer holds senior leadership positions that influence cardiac care and training at a national level.
Elected to one of the most prestigious roles in British medicine, Dr Nijjer held responsibility for the postgraduate training of cardiology trainees across London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. During his tenure he secured substantial funding to preserve and modernise the programme for future generations — pioneering its transition from an exclusive in-person central London setting to a comprehensive, accessible online format.
Dr Nijjer directs three high-volume cardiac catheter laboratories at Hammersmith Hospital — among the busiest in London. He previously served as Director of Governance for the entire Cardiovascular Directorate, spanning both Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, and led the Ealing Community Cardiology Service, the largest of Imperial's community-based programmes.
